PLUMBING LICENSING
Every person doing business in Memphis and Shelby County as a Registered and/or Licensed, Building, Building/Structure, Mechanical, Mover, Demolition, Gas (Master A & B), Electrical, and Plumbing Contractor shall file with the Building Official a bond in the penal sum of $25,000, and issued by an incorporated insurance company authorized to do business in Shelby County which has an office or agent located in Shelby County
Plumbing Licensing Requirements
No person or firm shall engage in or work at the business of plumbing, unless such person or firm shall first receive a license therefore in accordance with the provisions of the Technical Codes.  The license so issued shall specify the name of the person to whom it is issued, and if issued to a firm or corporation the license or certificate shall also specify the name of the person through whom the application for license was made.  No master plumber’s name shall be permitted to appear on more than one license or certificate at any time.  The license so issued shall not be assignable or transferable, either directly or indirectly, to any other person.

No registered journeyman plumber shall perform any plumbing or drainage work except for a licensed and bonded master plumber.  No registered journeyman plumber shall solicit or contract work.

No registered plumbing apprentice shall perform any plumbing or drainage work except as an assistant under the supervision of a person holding certificates of competency and registration as a master plumber or as a journeyman plumber

Before making an application to the Joint Plumbing Licensing Board to take the examination for licensing as a master plumber, each applicant must provide proof that he/she is a graduate engineer from an accredited college or university with at least 4 years experience in the design and installation of plumbing systems or that he/she is a licensed journeyman plumber and has had a minimum of 4 years experience in the installation of plumbing systems as a journeyman plumber.

Before making an application to the Joint Plumbing Licensing Board to take the examination for licensing as a journeyman plumber, each applicant must provide proof that he/she has had a minimum of 3 years experience installing or helping install plumbing installations

Septic Tank Cleaner/Installer $100 $100
There is a Fee to "Register" a State of Tennessee Contractor's License, to perform Plumbing Work in Memphis and Shelby County.  This fee is $150.00 per year.

Plumbing License Renewals
Plumbing licenses expire September 30th each year and must be renewed in September.  A $10 late fee shall be applied up to 2 years after date of expiration.  After 2 years, a new application, exam and appropriate fees will be required for issuance of new license.
